About Terry Hawtin

Terry Hawtin has been a lawyer for 17 years with 15 years in private practice as a defence lawyer. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws at University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar in 1991.

He has an impressive breadth of experience in defending clients charged with a vast array of criminal offences such as: drinking and driving; trafficking and possessing illegal drugs; fraud; assault causing bodily harm; domestic assault; and murder.

In September 2008, Terry was one of four owners who acquired X-COPPER Legal Services Professional Corporation (X-COPPER), one of Canada's most recognized paralegal firms.

Terry has been an enthusiastic member of several professional and community organizations including the Criminal Lawyers Association, National Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers, and York Region Law Association. He also served as President of the York Region Law Association, President of the East Toronto Community Legal Clinic, and Vice-Chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Ontario Bar Association. An avid skier, Terry is a member of the Canadian Ski Instructor's Alliance.

Terry has participated in many seminars and is a regular speaker on Criminal Law issues focusing on drinking and driving cases, Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and recent amendments to the Criminal Code.
