Everyone who has operated a vehicle in Ontario has likely seen another motorist change lanes without signalling. However, there is a question which you may have asked yourself, which is: When am I required to signal a lane change? The Highway Traffic Act provides excellent guidance when you are and are not required to signal your intent to change lanes.
While it is always the best practice to signal every lane change, when you are operating your vehicle the Highway Traffic Act specifically states you must signal your intent to enter or exit the road or change lanes while driving if it is likely to impact any other driver or motorist on the road. If your change of lanes or entering/exiting the road impacts other motorists and you have failed to signal, the police could conduct a traffic stop and give you a ticket.
If you are convicted of failing to signal a lane change you can receive a fine and demerit points will be added to your license. Since this would be considered a moving violation, a conviction of this nature may have a negative impact on your insurance.
If you have been charged with failing to signal a lane change the paralegals at X-Copper Law Firm are available to assist you in resolving your matter.
